Oscar: Eleven Months Old

Williamsburg, 2015

Oscar at eleven months (on Monday, but close enough) is a gorgeous, adventuresome, affectionate, babble-y guy. It's such a sweet age, really. Not yet walking but into everything, full of mischief, and very proud of his accomplishments.

It's also so fun seeing how much he now really understands games, whether it's rolling a ball back and forth or climbing up and down from a chair, improvising with musical instruments or playing with cars, chasing the cat or his brother (who responds with varying degrees of patience.)

Here's a look back at Axel at eleven months old.

A Few More

Williamsburg, 2015

We finally made it out of the Matchbox car-strewn bomb site that is our home and got some much needed fresh air, Jenga, and dumplings.

How long 'til spring?

Snow Day

Williamsburg, 2015

So the blizzard was a non-event here in the city.

I had hoped to wake up in a snow globe, with feet upon feet of snow piled up, but no such luck. In any case, our babysitter (and Will) had the day off in anticipation of an epic weather event, so we are all inside doing who knows what!

Our attempts to go play in the snow were thwarted by icy wind.  I think we have a few years ahead before sledding and hot chocolate come into play.

Instead these guys have been coloring on the furniture and throwing toy cars!

Prep

Williamsburg, 2015

Two very funny boys (with fantastic hair.)

Saturday's storm was a non-event but apparently we are preparing for a major blizzard here in New York...am not especially fussed given that all of our life is centered on about a 4 block radius, but I do love a big storm and we're stocked up on the requisite milk.

Happy Weekend

New York, 2015

Wow. I just went to the most Brooklyn-ish school bake sale of all time!

I mean, there were cookbook authors and vegan sprouted something-or-other cookies displayed on craft paper with artfully hand lettered signs...as well as lots of snippets of conversation about the parents' studio spaces and 4-dimensional immersive art projects.

Were I not in the relatively normal looking school gym (hearing mothers call their kids' by names like Petra, Magnolia, and Willa, of course) I would have thought I had stumbled into a very chichi bakery or a scene from Portlandia.

Which is not to say I didn't relish the whole experience.

Anyway, for the weekend, I leave you with this very funny piece on Davos; this article on the power of boredom; and this meditation on raclette (our German neighbor has invited us over for some tomorrow night, in the middle of what might be a big snow storm.)

A bonus to apartment living: we won't have to don shoes or leave the building to experience this culinary trip.

The Januarys

Williamsburg, 2015

Ugh the winter!

We attempted to go to the playground on yesterday's holiday, since it was a relatively balmy 42 degrees out, but I'll be honest: it was not pleasant.

I've had a sore throat since New Years and it feels like my very bones are cold. I am always underdressed, or overdressed, and am feeling permanently tired. My hair is doing that staticky thing and the boys definitely need more time outside. I have piles of work and am struggling to stay organized.

The good news is that in just about a month, we're headed to the sun for two weeks. So I just have to keep envisioning rum cocktails and bare feet on a loop.

Away

Maine, 2015

First weekend sans babies in 2.5 years!

Will and I took a quick trip to Portland for a friend's wedding, and managed to squeeze in dinner at Fore Street and lunch at Central Provisions. Loved all of the gorgeous old buildings (though it was bloody freezing...)

We're now back at home, cozy, and happy to be reunited with the boys.

Axelisms

Axel, 2015

"To the rescue...!" (while standing on top of an antique wooden wagon my mom has at her house in Maine)

"I can't" (when what he's really saying is "I don't want to...")

"What are you talking about?" (constantly)

"Hi Daddy, remember me?" (leaving a voice message for Will, who was en route home from work)

"Relax on the sofa!" (at bedtime, on what he'd rather be doing...)

Lately

Williamsburg, 2015

We've been working like mad, wrangling teething babies in the dead of winter, socializing, making stews, and trying to get creative about amusing ourselves in spite of the drizzly, somewhat miserable weather. No complaints, just lots of spinning plates (is that really the expression?)

Axel, 2015

This is what a January walk looks like in central Siberia. I mean Brooklyn.

Gear: Grey Rabbit Baby

by Grey Rabbit Baby

I haven't professed my love for a new baby line in quite some time, but Grey Rabbit Baby came across my radar this week and it's pretty lovely.

As in: tiny boots, hats, and sweaters made of Loro Piana cashmere lovely (totally practical!) But seriously, who cares about practicality? These pieces are heirloom-y in the best possible way.

These are nearly enough to make me long for a new baby. Ahem. I said nearly.

Adventures

Brooklyn, 2015

It was a cold, sleety day so we checked out the New York Transit Museum in downtown Brooklyn this morning and then visited some friends in Cobble Hill.

Axel had a blast running through the museum (a decommissioned subway station full of subway cars from 1907 on...) but was a bit perplexed that we never left the station.

11211 Love

Williamsburg, 2015

It's good to be back on our home turf, although after being away for a spell Brooklyn always seems like a caricature of Brooklyn for a few days.

Look at all these Brooklynites being Brooklynish, I find myself thinking.

Anyway, the tempo of change in the neighborhood has shifted into high gear lately, with news that places like the Wythe Diner are soon to be extinct, while Apple moves on in.

There are some other new kids in town as well, like the gorgeous coffee shop Devocion; Xi'an Famous Foods; The Heyward...and I'm sure quite a few more to come. Will and I were chatting on one of our epic car rides recently about all the changes (R.I.P. Tops).

Whatever happens, it's starting to feel very different from Williamsburg circa 2004.

Oscar: Ten Months Old

Oscar, 2014

Happy New Year!

We are home from Maine and more or less back into our routines (the great Christmas Nap Strike of 2014 appears to have come to an end.)

And here is Oscar, at ten months old. He's such a delight. A sturdy, funny guy who likes to squeal things that sound like 'Uh Oh' and 'Oh Yeah' and to grab cookies out of his brother's hand whenever possible. His eyes are still very very blue and his hair still stands on end (it's been combed down slightly in these pictures.)

His interests include balls, Sealface the cat, and pretty much anything edible. When he gets tired he likes to come for drive by cuddles on my chest and suck his thumb for a few seconds before army crawling off into the distance. Hard to believe that 2015 will be the year he turns one and becomes a toddler.

Here's a peek back at his brother at ten months old.
